The scenic beauty of an almost untouched nature around the Idukki dam
The Idukki Dam, a 168.91 m tall arch dam is built on the Periyar River in the ravine between the two mountains Kuravanmala (839 m) and Kuratjimala (925 m).
It is one of the highest arch dams in Asia.
Constructed and owned by the Kerala State Electricity Board, it supports a 780 MW hydroelectric power station.
Together with two other dams at Cheruthony and Kulamavu, an artificial lake that is 33 km2 in area has been created.
The Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary is located close by, spreading over 77 km2 about 450-748 m above sea level.
